![]() ![]() “I’ve already reached out to our team in Italy and said: ‘These are the three things I would like to try to do. ![]() So, I don’t want to get to that point - I want to do sewing trials, I want to make sure we give our sustainability team enough time to vet the materials, so that by the time we’re ready to make the garments, we feel really confident that we’re going to like the product,” she says.Īs an example, she previously wouldn’t have started planning her Autumn/Winter 2024 collection until the summer, she says. “If we don’t like the way the fabric is sewing, or we’ve selected something and fallen in love with it and it doesn’t pass our vetting, often there’s no other options. She needs time to research and develop the right materials, and to run trials and produce samples with enough time to find a workaround if it doesn’t turn out right, without compromising on the brand’s values. The biggest shift is all about timing, and how much farther in advance she starts working on a collection. The learning curve during Giardina’s first year at Another Tomorrow has been “completely vertical”, she says: “There are considerations I’ve never had in the past.” Working with a flexible vision, and a lot of extra time However, some younger startups have managed to only work with suppliers that meet their standards and have developed a base of customers seeking those values. Established brands face challenges such as overhauling massive supply chains, for cotton or wool for example, and educating their customers about shifts in manufacturing practices and why they’re important. While sustainability strategies are common in fashion now, the work looks different at established brands that are striving, some with impressive speed and scale, to reform and improve existing supply chains and operations, than it does at brands founded with certain values in place from the start. Speaking the day after her one-year anniversary at Another Tomorrow, Giardina reflects on what is different about working at a brand like Another Tomorrow - which has put sustainability first since its founding in 2018 - compared to working at brands that operate under the industry’s more traditional production model. The company wants to prove it’s also possible to keep that list of values intact, rather than picking and choosing specific issues, whether it’s agricultural practices or labour standards, based on availability or cost. Luxury itself is out of reach for average consumers, and while many brands, luxury included, take on new sustainability initiatives one at a time, Another Tomorrow says it aims to show it’s possible to deliver the whole package: fashionable, high-end products that are made in alignment with the ethical and environmental criteria that so many brands and customers say they value. While it’s unlikely that Another Tomorrow will shift that perception, there’s potential to shift the larger context. On the flip side, fashion marketed as eco-friendly has often been criticised as being elitist and out-of-reach for the average consumer - just as products in the food sector, among others, have been. It could become less rare, if Another Tomorrow is successful in modelling a future for what the fashion industry could look like, something that Giardina says the team talks regularly about trying to do. The career move is a reminder of how rarely the worlds of high fashion and sustainable-first fashion meet. ![]()

![]() ![]() Saved the more “difficult” polishes for last! Difficult in the sense that these were the two that had such an uneven first coat when I applied them. This one does not have as large or as bright of glitter as Yule Jewels, but it sure still is pretty under false light! Darker and more opaque than Yule Jewels, it also leans on the cooler, more blue undertone kind of red. Santa Monica Claus is a red gold shimmer lacquer. Even with 3 coats I still saw a smidge of nail line, and I don’t see any holographic reflect in this polish, the glitter also looks mostly orange-red with hints of green, I find it more dimensional. It is a lighter red compared to Santa Monica Claus, and leans quite warm, like an orange-red. Yule Jewels is a light red lacquer with holographic flakes. Both of them are red, but have different undertones to them and I find the sparkle quite different on the two. Is this what is known as a “crelly” formula? Not really a cream and not really a jelly? I could still see my nail line from far away in 2 coats, so these nail definitely needed three coats for more opacity. ![]() These shades also remind me of soft, frosted looking ornaments, but they are so soft I do feel some spring vibes coming from them. ![]() I also learned that this type of polish formula is supposed to be the kind of that shows brush strokes, but I think I did an okay job on the second coat! In comparison to Screen Vixen, the particles are all the same size and colour except it’s a shiny finish. They both have similar metallic pearl finishes, but I do notice Silent Nightlife looks a little softer than Famous Fir Sure based on the photo. Silent Nightlife is a lavender shimmer crème. It reminds me of a non-traditional colour holiday party dress! I find the depth of the purple a bit more prominent than what’s shown in the photo. ![]() Valet the Sleigh is a purple glitter, that has silver, black, magenta, and red glitter. It is my favourite classic, neutral colour out of the four so far! I can also still see a bit of nail line after the second coat, but it’s not very noticeable unless I look up close. In the photo it looks like champagne gold, but in person the colour reminds me of an ivory wedding dress that has a hint of pink with sparkles running through it. Once a top coat is added, it sparkles like Tinsel Town, Snow Biz, and Slay Your Line. Melrose Fireplace is a champagne gold shimmer. Adding a top coat brings the shine back to both. I grouped these two polishes together because they both have larger glitter and dry down to a textured finish. Again another pretty colour, but the it looked off with my skin tone. The polish was fully opaque in 2 coats, and a bit of shine was brought back with a top coat. Screen Vixen is a gold shimmer matte, a type of polish I never knew existed! The finish and colour reminds me of a frosted gold ornament. It’s what Kelli Marissa would call a “blurple” – sometimes I see an icy blue, other times icy purple. I see hints of red, green and magenta glitter when it sparkles. Pretty colour, but it is quite bright and cool for my undertone. Their shimmer had mostly the same colour, and all created a sparkly wet icicle effect in real life! I saw a bit of nail line with 2 coats, but it wasn’t obvious unless I inspected up close. They are shimmer polishes but looked almost foiled when angled differently. I grouped these three shades together because they all had the same finish and effect. My opinions are honest, always *casts doe patronus* This in no way effects my opinion of the products. Note that some polishes did need 3 coats, which I will flag down below. For every swatch, I used a base coat, painted two coats, and topped off with Seche Vite quick dry top coat. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The 2nd Av Subway planned in 1947 would have tied together existing lines in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and new lines in Queens. But going forward it is becoming increasingly clear that the division between city and state needs is now starting to have long term consequences when it comes to 2nd Av and the future of transit in NYC. ![]() This was a political decision and ultimately a wise one as it has had a direct positive impact on subway crowding already. Phase 1 of 2nd Av was designed so that it could directly connect to the existing system, rather than an entire separate line, and show the city that it could actually be built. Conceptual track map of Phase 1 and 2 of 2nd Ave Subway. Since then the MTA has been focused more on maintaining the crumbling system rather than expanding it. When the MTA was created in 1968 it was a state agency so their onus for city planning was reduced. When the New York City Transit Authority ran the subways before 1968 it was part of the city and beholden to the Mayor which meant there was more pressure to expand to serve new areas. The MTA cannot be totally faulted for this mentality, after all they are primarily in the business of running trains, not urban planning, and their primary concern is dealing with existing congestion so trains run smoother and safer. Their mentality is that the crowding on the Lexington Av Line is worst along the Upper East Side and that south of 63rd St there are more options for riders and less need for a new trunk line. What may come as a shock to riders is that the MTA does not actually see the last two phases as a priority. The same cannot be said for Phases 3 and 4. While cost is on everyone’s mind there is at least momentum to get Phase 2 built. Should Phase 2 actually cost what it is projected it would be the most expensive subway line in the world out shining the current champion, Phase 1 of 2nd Av. Even with the reuse of the existing tunnels the current price tag is around $6 billion which has given many pause since Phase 1, which did included new tunnels, clocked in at $4.5 billion. North of 120th St the line will make a broad curve west under 125th St (supposedly with provisions for an extension north to the Bronx) and will terminate at a station several stories below the existing 125th St Station on the Lexington Av Line and an exit connecting to the elevated Metro-North station at Park Ave. The 1970s plan, oddly, did not include a station at 116th St but instead had space for a third track for layups and maintenance this space is now being planned for an infill station at 116th St. Phase 2 also will reuse the original tunnels built in the 1970s from 96th St north to 120th St. ![]() Currently engineering work is being done along with utility relocation for Phase 2. Planning for Phase 2, from 96th St/2nd Av to 125th St/Lexington Av has begun but construction isn’t planned to start until after 2019 because funding was cut by Governor Andrew Cuomo from the 2015-2019 budget. Proposed design for 125th St Station in Phase 2 of 2nd Ave. But after the euphoria died down and commuters began to adjust to the new line the inevitable question of “what’s next” came up. The Great White Whale of New York transit lore had finally been bested and we were lost in the moment, celebrating the fact that the city had fulfilled a promise nearly 90 years old. Jaded New Yorkers, exhausted by nearly a decade of construction work, made their way down through the new stations to marvel at the accomplishment. On Decemthe first phase of the long awaited 2nd Ave Subway opened from 63rd St/Lexington Av to 96th St/2nd Av. We are designing the world’s most expensive subway and it won’t help most New Yorkers. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Bible gives us all of the instructions on how to live a life that is pleasing to God. Hector, meanwhile, has a whistle that can pull his enemies into a bear trap.įinally, our last bit of praise before the storm. John's throwing knife can be used to take out an enemy quickly and quietly, while Doc McCoy can use his medicine bag to gas an enemy before breaking their neck. The main characters are John Cooper, a guy who's handy with his knife and two revolvers the charming Kate, who can distract enemies Hector, who has a bear trap the mysterious Isabelle and then there's Doc McCoy, the sharpshooter. To that end, you find yourselves taking on bad guy after bad guy in situations such as a train during a hold-up, a wedding that has gone horribly wrong, and a trip to a town where the railroad is pulling down houses without consent. I was also delighted to get my hands on the PS4 version of the game, although looking back now I think that this may have not been the best idea - but I'll get to that later!ĭesperados III acts as a prequel to past events and shows how a motley crew of five rogues gets together so they can stick it to the man. In fact, I was actually really excited about playing this one as I loved the originals. For those not in the know, it's a top-down tactics series with a western twist that follows a group of characters as they tear it up in the Wild West. Go play Desperados III.It's been a while since a Desperados game hit our virtual shelves. Desperados III certainly ain’t no Red Dead Redemption, but If you are in for slow methodical gameplay and stomach the save system, you will be in for a good time. This game is definitely for the more patient gamer and all that patience and planning pays off satisfyingly when a set strategy goes according to plan, making you feel like one of the wily members of John Coopers crew. The playable characters are unique and present various ways to tackle each mission. Its western setting has been put to good use bringing multiple playable levels to life. Overall, Desperados III is a great game that blends methodical stealth and isometric real time tactics cooking up its own flavor in the genre. Something I hope this newly independent studio considers while working on their next game. I do not mean this as a criticism though as Shadow Tactics in itself is a great game and I would not mind more of it, but a few more notable changes and innovations to set one title apart from the other would be great. From its stealth focused core gameplay to juggling skillsets of multiple characters, right down to the Showdown mode that lets you plan future actions of characters, all elements have been borrowed from the previous game set in Edo period Japan and executed with a bit more polish in this wild west setting. With all the above said, I do have to point out that Desperados III is pretty much a reskin of the studio’s previous game, Shadow Tactics. These moments feel like experiencing a western through and through. But it especially elevates the quieter moments of the game, of which there are plenty, when you hide your characters in the environment while scoping out the map and plan the next move. ![]() Background score is top notch and shines during cutscenes and loading screens. The visuals and voice acting are up to the mark and sell the Wild West setting with ease. ![]() Thankfully the mishandled save system was about as bad as the game gets, because the rest of the experience is rather impressive. ![]() ![]() ![]() Often she wakes up screaming, and Papa comforts her.
